Building Bridges Through Commercial Beekeeping
BellaFam Africa Hosts South Sudan Honey Producers for Knowledge Exchange and Future Collaboration
17 August 2026
On Monday, 17 August 2026, BellaFam Africa had the privilege of welcoming leaders from honey-producing groups in South Sudan for an important engagement centred on commercial beekeeping, bee products and market opportunities.
The visit brought together beekeeping stakeholders from South Sudan and Kenya with a shared vision: to explore how collaboration, knowledge and access to markets can unlock greater opportunities for beekeepers across the region.
For BellaFam Africa, this was more than a visit. It was an opportunity to exchange experiences, share practical knowledge and begin conversations that could lead to meaningful collaboration between beekeeping communities in Kenya and South Sudan.
When Beekeeping Becomes a Business
Beekeeping has the potential to become much more than a source of honey. Across Africa, the industry presents opportunities for farmers, cooperatives and entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses around a wide range of bee products.
From honey and beeswax to bee propolis and other value-added products, the hive offers multiple opportunities for income generation.
But unlocking this potential requires more than keeping bees. It requires knowledge, quality production, proper processing, business skills, branding and, most importantly, access to reliable markets.
Connecting Kenya and South Sudan
The engagement provided an opportunity for BellaFam Africa to share experiences from Kenya's beekeeping sector while learning more about the experiences, opportunities and challenges faced by honey-producing groups in South Sudan.
Such exchanges are important because every beekeeping community has something to teach and something to learn.
By creating connections across borders, beekeepers can share practical approaches to hive management, honey production, product quality, value addition and market development.
Ultimately, stronger connections can help create stronger businesses and a more competitive African bee products industry.
A Collaboration Initiated Through the International Trade Centre
The engagement was initiated through the International Trade Centre (ITC), represented by Isatou Jallow, ITC Associate Programme Officer, Geneva, and Susan Kuira, International Consultant on Agricultural Market Access.
Their involvement reflects the importance of strengthening agricultural market access and creating connections that allow producers to move beyond production and participate more effectively in local, regional and international markets.
The future of African agriculture will be built through partnerships, knowledge exchange and stronger market linkages.
Beyond Honey: Unlocking the Value of the Hive
One of the key conversations during the engagement was the broader potential of bee products.
Honey is undoubtedly one of the most recognised products of beekeeping. However, commercial beekeeping presents opportunities to develop additional products such as bee propolis, beeswax and other value added bee products.
Proper harvesting, processing, packaging and marketing can significantly increase the value generated from every hive.
Why Value Addition Matters
- Creates additional income streams for beekeepers
- Reduces dependence on raw honey sales
- Encourages better utilisation of hive products
- Creates opportunities for small businesses and cooperatives
- Improves the potential for accessing premium markets
The Importance of Commercial Beekeeping Training
Sustainable growth in beekeeping requires knowledge that goes beyond the apiary.
A modern beekeeper needs to understand the entire journey of a bee product — from the hive to the final customer.
This includes apiary management, production, quality control, harvesting, processing, packaging, branding, business management and market access.
This is why commercial beekeeping training remains an important part of building a stronger and more professional industry.
At BellaFam Africa, we believe that empowering beekeepers with practical knowledge can help transform beekeeping from a small-scale activity into a sustainable commercial enterprise.
A Shared Vision
"When beekeepers connect, knowledge moves. When knowledge moves, opportunities grow."
Building stronger beekeeping communities requires collaboration across borders.
Looking Towards Future Collaboration
The visit marked an important beginning for conversations around future collaboration between beekeeping stakeholders in Kenya and South Sudan.
There is significant potential for cooperation in areas such as commercial beekeeping training, technical knowledge exchange, bee-product development, value addition and market linkages.
Such partnerships can create opportunities not only for individual beekeepers, but also for cooperatives, businesses and communities whose livelihoods depend on agriculture.
At BellaFam Africa, we are excited about the possibilities that these conversations can create and look forward to exploring practical ways of strengthening the connection between the two countries' beekeeping sectors.
Our Vision for African Beekeeping
We believe Africa has everything it needs to build a thriving and competitive beekeeping industry.
What is needed is greater investment in knowledge, quality production, value addition, entrepreneurship and market access.
BellaFam Africa is committed to being part of that journey — supporting beekeepers, encouraging collaboration and contributing to the growth of a professional and commercially sustainable bee-products industry.
From the Hive to the Market
The South Sudan delegation's visit reminded us that the opportunities within beekeeping extend far beyond the honey jar.
They extend to livelihoods, entrepreneurship, agriculture, trade and regional collaboration.
When knowledge is shared, relationships are built. When relationships are built, markets become more accessible. And when markets become accessible, beekeepers have a greater opportunity to turn their hard work into sustainable businesses.
The journey towards a stronger African beekeeping industry is one we can only build together.
Thank You
